You bring home a beautiful bouquet.
It looks perfect.
Three days later, one flower has given up on life, another is staring dramatically at the table, and the water looks suspicious.
The good news?
A few simple habits can make a real difference.
Here are seven things florists actually do.
1. Start With a Clean Vase
This is less glamorous than discussing roses, but it matters.
Bacteria in a dirty vase can shorten the life of cut flowers.
Wash the vase properly before adding fresh water.
If the vase still contains mysterious residue from the last bouquet, it is not ready.
2. Trim the Stems
Before placing flowers in water, trim the stems with a clean sharp knife or floral shears.
A fresh cut helps the stems take up water.
You do not need to perform surgery.
Just remove a small amount cleanly.
3. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line
Leaves sitting in water decompose.
Decomposing leaves encourage bacterial growth.
Bacterial growth is not your bouquet’s friend.
Remove foliage that would otherwise sit below the water level.
4. Change the Water
Do not wait until the water looks like a pond.
Fresh water helps flowers stay hydrated and keeps the vase cleaner.
If possible, change it every couple of days.
5. Keep Flowers Away From Direct Heat
Flowers generally prefer a cooler location.
Do not place them directly beside a radiator, heating vent or extremely sunny window.
Your bouquet does not need a tropical vacation.
6. Remove Flowers That Are Finished
One flower fading before the others does not mean the entire bouquet is finished.
Remove stems that have passed their best.
The arrangement will immediately look fresher.
Sometimes a large bouquet becomes a smaller beautiful bouquet rather than going straight into the garbage.
7. Re-Trim When Necessary
If the bouquet has been sitting for several days, another small trim can help refresh the stems.
Change the water at the same time.
This is particularly useful for flowers that still look healthy but seem slightly thirsty.
Bonus Tip: Stop Expecting Every Flower to Last the Same Amount of Time
Different flowers have different natural vase lives.
That is normal.
A mixed bouquet changes as it ages.
Remove flowers as they finish, rearrange what remains and enjoy the bouquet in stages.
That is part of having fresh flowers in the house.
They are alive.
Temporarily.
Which is probably part of why we love them.
